Passeio da Poente
GPS route – Wandelen Algarve – São Bras de Alportel (SBA PR5)
6.1 mi. Moderate 120m São Romão
Passeio da Poente walk (SBA PR5) is one of the most diverse walks the Eastern Algarve has to offer. The starting point we chose is about 6 miles from B&B Cas al Cubo in the centre of Farrobo. The official starting point however, is at the church of São Romao. The walk covers the northwest area of São Bras de Alportel. The route offers an insight in both the wild nature of the Algarve mountains and the traditional way of living in the villages where it looks as if time stood still.

Passeio da Poente walk (SBA PR5) is a medium difficult 6 mile circular walk and GPS track from São Bras de Alportel. The official route starts at the small church of São Romão. We started in Farrobo which is a small village between sâo Brás de Alportel and Alportel, along the N2. The walk starts on a narrow path leading you down into the valley between the houses of Farrobo. Slowly civilization is left behind and becomes the scene. The path climbs up to the ridge that stretches west of São Brás de Alportel. Slowly the panorama widens and from the ridge you have an unobstructed view of Faro and beyond the Atlantic Ocean.
The paths that you use have been the connection between the small farming communities for centuries. You imagine yourself alone and on the roof of the world. The hamlets that the walk passes look as if time has stood still. The “miradouro” or the viewpoint of São Brás de Alportel is breathtakingly beautiful, especially at sunset. About three quarters of the walk the restaurant “Snackbar” Correia in São Romão is a good place for a snack or a full lunch. This route is an absolute must for those who love hiking in the Eastern Algarve.
