We present here only one sector of the Via Algarviana long distance walking route. The Via Algarviana does not consist of circular walks. It is a continuous track sometimes it is hard to organise transport from finish back to the car. On this stretch however,Sector 6 from Barranco do Velho and Salir, there is a bus running between start and finish. You just have to adapt to the bus schedule.
We drive to Barranco do Velho were we park the car and take take the bus to Salir. We start sector 6 at the church square. Behind the church a small path takes you directly into a kind of secret garden with all kinds of small veiled tracks, along crumbling walls and with plenty of flowers and birds. The long climb of this hike begins after about 4.2 mile. It takes a while, but the reward is big. It is a bit cooler on top of the ridge, but the view of the surrounding landscape is breathtaking. A good time for a short stop; a cup of tea and a sandwich. In the distance the sea sparkles and behind you the church of Salir keeps sticking out of the landscape. The rest of this sector you walk ‘at height’ and you continue to enjoy the panorama.
Lunch after exertion!
In Barranco do Velho, the car is waiting a stone’s throw from a restaurant: A Tia Bia. A nice place for a cup of coffee or a very good lunch. Sector six runs through a beautiful, dead-quiet part of the Eastern Algarve and is highly recommended for the hiker in good condition!
